Anxiety

Anxiety

Some degree of anxiety can be good for you. It can help boost your motivation and prepare you for life’s challenges. A certain amount of anxiety can also increase your alertness and improve your performance.  However, when anxiety gets out of hand, it can impact on your relationships, mood, and ability to participate in the things you enjoy. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, anxiety is the most common mental health disorder for people aged between 16–85 years. Anxiety symptoms can vary from person to person, but may include some or all of the following:

Thinking:

  • Constant worries
  • Racing thoughts
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Excessive fear
  • Assuming the worst
  • Feeling critical of yourself and others
  • Jumping to conclusions

Physical:

  • Shallow or rapid breathing
  • Racing heart
  • Muscle tension
  • Restlessness
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Physical health issues such as IBS, stomach issues and rashes

Behaviour:

  • Avoiding new situations
  • Withdrawal from others
  • Procrastination
  • Engaging in dysfunctional coping strategies such as drugs, alcohol, or over eating
  • Engaging in rituals or compulsions to cope with anxiety
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Anger

How can we help?

When anxious, unhelpful thoughts can take root in your mind and distort the severity of situations, causing small things to feel like catastrophes. Your nervous system responds to protect you from this unknown threat, preparing you to fight or flight. When crippled with anxiety, the thought of talking to someone can also feel threatening and stressful and led to avoidance. However, once you take the first step you will quickly see how treatable anxiety can be, and how, with the right support, you can learn to calm your nervous system and take back control of your life.

Our psychologists will work with you to understand your experience of anxiety and tailor a treatment plan that draws on a variety of evidence-based treatment practices including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Solution Focused Therapy, Exposure therapy, and Behaviour Therapy. We can also assist with the management of some of the secondary effects of anxiety such as poor sleep, fatigue, and difficulty with focus and concentration.
