Depression

Depression

We can all have good and bad days. Feelings of sadness can be normal when dealing with difficult personal situations. These feelings are usually short-term and do not affect our everyday life.

However, depression is more than just feeling sad. It’s an intense and prolonged feeling of sadness that can be all encompassing. You may feel overwhelmed, isolated, and overcome with despair. Things that once provided joy and happiness no longer do so, and you may lack energy and motivation to do things. Depression is an individual experience presenting different symptoms for different people. You may experience some or all of the following:

  • Loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities
  • Difficulty getting started or getting tasks done
  • Feelings of despair, worthlessness, and helplessness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Forgetfulness and difficulty making decisions
  • Irritability and increase frustration
  • Withdrawing from family and friends
  • Lack of appetite
  • Poor sleep
  • Increased use of substances
  • Lack of confidence
